Zhuhai Travel Guide: China's Seaside Escape Next to Macau

Zhuhai (珠海, Zhūhǎi) is the China most foreigners never see: wide empty boulevards, a 28-kilometer coastal promenade, and air you can actually breathe. Built from scratch as a Special Economic Zone in 1980, it's the anti-Guangzhou — no honking chaos, no tour-group swirl. Just a planned, tidy seaside city sitting directly on the border with Macau.

Most travelers land here for one of three reasons, and each is valid: Chimelong Ocean Kingdom (one of Asia's best theme parks), the 5-minute border crossing into Macau, or simply a quiet base from which to explore the Pearl River Delta. What surprises people is that Zhuhai is worth a stop on its own. Come for 2–3 days and use it as a slow coastal breather between Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou.

Before you pick: the fast facts

Best time: October to April — mild (15–25°C), low humidity, almost no typhoon risk. June to September is hot (32–37°C) and humid, with typhoons from July that can cancel island ferries at short notice. Skip the Chinese New Year and Golden Week; the border queues explode.

Getting around: Zhuhai has no citywide metro — don't trust apps that show a "Line 1." You'll rely on buses (¥1 a ride, pay by Alipay transit QR), taxis/rideshares (¥10 for the first 3 km), shared bikes along the coast, and the new Airport Intercity Railway. Amazon's Zhuhai Airline: the airport rail runs from Jinwan Airport to downtown in ~40 min for about ¥25 ($3.50).

Where to stay, in one line each: Gongbei Port for border access and dining; Jida / Lovers Road for sea views; Hengqin Island for Chimelong. Budget ¥40–85 ($6–12) a night at hostels, ¥250–600 ($35–85) for mid-range hotels.

The classic three-day shape: Day 1 — cycle Lovers Road, Fisher Girl statue, Sun & Moon Shell theatre at dusk. Day 2 — Chimelong Ocean Kingdom (a full day with kids) or cross into Macau on foot. Day 3 — seafood by the Jiuzhou fish port and a ferry to one of the islands.

Getting to Zhuhai: arrival routes

• From Hong Kong: the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge shuttle bus (¥100–120 / $14–17), ~40 min from the HK Lantau terminal to Zhuhai's HZMB port. Or ferries (~1 hr) from Hong Kong to Jiuzhou Port for ¥150–250 ($21–35).
• From Macau: just walk across at Gongbei Port — it genuinely takes 5–10 minutes on a weekday (open 24 hrs). Taxi from Macau's Barrier Gate area to Zhuhai is ¥20–30 ($3–4).
• From Guangzhou: high-speed rail from Guangzhou South to Zhuhai, ~45 min, ¥55–85 ($8–12).
• From Shenzhen: HSR ~50–60 min, ¥60–90 ($8–13).
• By air: Zhuhai Jinwan Airport (ZUH) is 40 km from the city, mostly domestic flights. The Intercity Railway connects it downtown in ~40 min.

Visas & entry

The 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit now applies across much of Guangdong, and Hengqin Port and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge are eligible entry ports. If you're transiting onward to a third country, you may not need a visa at all. The older Zhuhai-only SEZ visa (up to 3 days, entry from Hong Kong/Macau) still exists at Gongbei, Hengqin and Jiuzhou ferry, but is granted selectively — a full visa or the 240-hour transit is far more reliable. Confirm current rules before you fly; policy changes fast.

Food: eat by the sea

Zhuhai's food is Cantonese seafood, full stop. Because it faces the sea, restaurants here pick from the tank, not the freezer. Must-tries: steamed Baijiao sea bass (盐焗海鲈), Guishan Island squid (万山鱿鱼), Doumen crab (斗门蟹), and the morning tradition of yum cha (饮茶) dim sum. Watch for sand shrimp (沙虾), a local specialty. Budget: ¥30–60 ($4–8) for a street meal, ¥80–150 ($11–21) per person for a proper seafood dinner. Many Macau residents cross the border just for Zhuhai's cheaper and fresher seafood — a good sign.

Attractions worth your days

• Chimelong Ocean Kingdom (长隆海洋王国) — world-class aquarium and theme park; entry ¥345 ($48) standard (up to ¥599 / $84 with express lanes). Full day, arrive at the 10am gate to beat crowds.
• Lovers Road (情侣路) — the 28 km seafront promenade, free, best by bike or e-scooter.
• Fisher Girl Statue (珠海渔女) — Zhuhai's iconic landmark, free.
• Sun & Moon Shell (日月贝) — the seashell-shaped Grand Theatre, best after dark.
• New Yuanming Palace (圆明新园) — a free replica of Beijing's Old Summer Palace.
• Island hop: Wailingding (外伶仃岛) or Dong'ao (东澳岛) islands, ~1–2 hrs by ferry from Jiuzhou Port for clear-water swimming and hiking.

Pitfalls & honest warnings

• The "metro" trap: some travel apps draw a phantom metro line over the city. There isn't one open yet — budget extra travel time or use taxis for cross-district trips.
• Border queues: Gongbei is one of the world's busiest crossings (200k+ a day). Midweek mornings are fine; weekends and holidays mean 1–3 hour waits. Avoid Chinese New Year entirely.
• Typhoon season (July–Sept): island ferries cancel with little notice. Check the day before.
• UV is brutal by the sea: sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat — even in "shoulder" months.
• Island ferry schedules shift with weather; confirm the day before you plan to go.

Daily budget

• Budget: ¥300–450 ($42–64) — hostel, buses, street food, free attractions.
• Mid-range: ¥450–700 ($64–100) — hotel, some taxis, a seafood dinner.
• Splurge: ¥700+ ($100+) — Chimelong day pass plus a resort on Hengqin.
