Lovers' Road (情侣路, Qínglǚ Lù) is Zhuhai's signature: a ~28-kilometer palm-lined promenade hugging the coast from Gongbei Port near the Macau border to Yeli Island in the north. Free, open around the clock, and shared by walkers, cyclists, and couples posing at golden hour, it strings together most of the city's best-known sights in one long, genuinely pleasant shoreline walk.
Pick a section, not the whole road. The most iconic stretch runs from the Love Post Office and its white lighthouse (love letters and lock walls here) south past the Zhuhai Fisher Girl statue to the City Balcony viewpoint — about 7 km, doable in 2–3 easy hours with photo stops. Farther north, at the Sun & Moon Shell Opera House (珠海大剧院, Zhūhǎi Dà Jùyuàn), you get the city's best night-shot: the twin clam-shell domes light up beautifully after dusk.
Getting there. Two cheap buses, 9 and 99 (¥1 / $0.14 per ride), stop at the key landmarks; Amap or Apple Maps navigates more reliably than Google Maps here. Shared bikes rent for ¥20–40 ($3–6) per hour along dedicated cycling lanes when you'd rather cover ground than stroll.
Go for the sunset. Arrive 4–5 PM, catch the beach light, then watch the sky and the skyline glow until the coastal lamps flick on around 7 PM — furnished by views across the Pearl River estuary toward Macau's skyline. Weekends and public holidays pack the best viewpoints; a weekday visit is noticeably calmer. Bring your own water.
Practical tips
- Don't try to walk the whole 28 km — choose one section. The classic 2-3 hour route runs Love Post Office lighthouse → Zhuhai Fisher Girl → City Balcony, and is best timed for 4-7 PM when the sunset and city lights come up together (the pearl lamps stay lit until ~11 PM). Bring water, sunscreen and a light windbreaker: shade is patchy and the sea breeze picks up toward dusk. Buses 9 and 99 (¥1 per ride) hit the key stops. Public restrooms appear every 1-2 km — watch the blue signs. Shared bikes cost ¥20-40/hour along dedicated cycling lanes; walking is slower but lets you stop freely.
