Sun & Moon Shell Theatre (日月贝)

Sun & Moon Shell Theatre (日月贝, Rìyuèbèi) is Zhuhai's signature landmark: two giant white scallop shells rising from Yeli Island (野狸岛, Yělí Dǎo), the only island opera house on mainland China. Officially Zhuhai Grand Theatre (珠海大剧院, Zhūhǎi Dà Jùyuàn), it opened in January 2017 after a ¥1.08 billion build. The 90-metre "Sun Shell" holds a 1,550-seat opera hall; the 60-metre "Moon Shell" a 550-seat multifunctional theatre. By day the domes gleam white against turquoise water; after dark, LED lighting cycles blue, pink and violet across them.

The free show is the building itself. The plaza, seafront walk and evening light show need no ticket. Arrive 2–4 PM, loop the 3 km island greenway (shared bikes about ¥20/$3 per hour; electric bikes are banned on the island), climb the short hill trail to the mid-mountain platform for the full bay panorama, then stay through sunset — themed light shows run roughly 8–9 PM on weekends and holidays (free), while the shells keep a single colour until about 10:30 PM on weekdays. Zhuhai Museum's fifth-floor terrace offers a free, uncrowded overhead view (reserve via mini-program).

Going inside costs planning. Performance tickets run ¥100–800 ($14–112) and sell out fast on weekends; book ahead on the official "Zhuhai Grand Theatre" WeChat account or Damai (大麦, Dàmài). The interior is closed to walk-ins without a show ticket, and the theatre shuts Mondays for maintenance.

Getting there. Bus Z11 stops right at the theatre; buses 9/99 reach Mingting Park (名亭公园), a 5-minute walk away. A taxi from Zhuhai Station takes roughly 15 minutes. Haiyun City (海韵城) mall below the shells has restaurants and a Starbucks terrace for sunset photos — and since weekends are packed, a weekday visit buys the same view with half the crowd.
