Wailingding Island (外伶仃岛, Wàilíngdīng Dǎo) is the wilder sister of Zhuhai's Wanshan archipelago (万山群岛, Wànshān Qúndǎo) — a 4.2 km² islet about an hour and a half by ferry, and the only place on the mainland where you can see Hong Kong's skyline across the water on a clear day. Its name nods to Wen Tianxiang's famous poem "Crossing Lingdingyang," giving the place a literary charge.
Getting there. Only boats reach it. From Zhuhai, ferries sail from Xiangzhou Port, taking 70–80 minutes and costing ¥140 ($19) one way; a slower option runs from Hengqin Wharf (横琴码头). From Shenzhen, Shekou sails in ~75 minutes for ¥160 ($22). The island itself is free to enter — your main outlay is the boat, so book both legs ahead.
What to do. Start at the Mineral Lake (矿石湖, Kuàngshí Hú), an old quarry lake of startling Tiffany-blue water ringed by green ridges. Walk the Jade Belt Around the Waist (玉带环腰, Yùdài Huányāo), a stone staircase path ("Lovers' Road") cut into the cliffs, then climb Lingding Peak (伶仃峰, 311 m) through Shijing Park's sculpture-like rocks for panoramic sea views or sunrise. Twin Pavilions Beach (双子亭) has swimmable water; at the pier, dine on sea urchin, goose barnacles, and "General's Hat" shells — a seafood dinner runs about ¥100–150 ($14–21) per person. Staying over costs roughly ¥300–600 ($42–84) a night at island guesthouses.
What to know. This is a nature and photo stop, not a resort — pack water, sunscreen, and a hat. Trails are steep and exposed, so wear proper shoes. Weekend ferries fill fast, so book early.

- The ferry timetable locks your whole day — book a round trip from Xiangzhou Port (香洲港) in advance on the WeChat mini-program and confirm the last sailing back, arriving at the pier 30 min early. Days are tight, so aim for the first boat out. The island sightseeing car (全岛观光车, ¥120/$16) saves hours getting from Mineral Lake to Lingding Peak if you skip hiking. Wear sunscreen and good walking shoes — trails are sunny and exposed. Bring cash as a backup: island card/ATM coverage is patchy beside mobile pay. Peak weekends and holidays sell out ferries, so book 1-2 days ahead. Taste the island's 'three treasures' — sea urchin, goose barnacles, and General's Hat shells — at the pier seafood market (decide a price first; touts pad bills).
