Zhuhai Fisher Girl (珠海渔女, Zhūhǎi Yú Nǚ) is the city's symbol: a 8.7-meter granite figure of a young woman standing on a rock in Xianglu Bay, holding a pearl aloft with both hands. Sculptor Pan He (潘鹤) finished her in 1982 — China's first large-scale seaside statue — and she became a protected cultural relic in 2014. The legend behind her: a celestial dragon girl descended to the sea to live as a fisherwoman, fell in love with a fisherman named Haipeng, and gave her life to prove it. Locals still tell the story; travelers just photograph her.

Free, and open any hour. The statue sits at No. 63 Middle Lovers' Road (情侣路, Qínglǚ Lù), with no ticket and no booking. Buses 9 or 99 stop at "Zhuhai Fisher Girl" a 2-minute walk away (¥1 per ride); cyclists can take the shared bikes along the promenade (¥20–40/hour). From Zhuhai Station by the Macau border, it's a ~15-minute taxi.

Photo timing is everything. Come 6:30–8:00 AM for the statue nearly to yourself, or 4:30–7:00 PM for golden-hour light as the pearl-shaped lamps flick on at sunset (lit until ~11 PM). Avoid midday June–September: the granite radiates heat with zero shade. Wedding-photography crews colonize the best rocks after 4 PM — earlier beats them.

Shoot from the stone steps below (classic low angle), the western rock ledge (sea backdrop, fewer people), or the City Balcony viewpoint above for a panorama. Sea moss makes the rocks slippery — no scrambling, no swimming. Snack stands sell grilled squid and sour-plum juice; carry your own water.

Practical tips

  • Arrive before 8 AM or after 4:30 PM — early mornings beat the wedding-photography crews and the heat. The rocks are slippery with sea moss: no climbing, no swimming. Bring water (shade gets patchy past the first kilometer) and sunscreen. Continue north along Lovers' Road to the Love Post Office lighthouse and the Sun & Moon Shell Opera House for the classic Zhuhai coastal walk.
