You have seen this landscape before, probably without knowing where it was: jagged limestone peaks rising straight out of green rice paddies, a bamboo raft drifting on a glassy river, a water buffalo standing knee-deep at the bank. It is printed on the back of the ¥20 note. In Guilin (桂林 Guìlín, "forest of sweet osmanthus") you can stand at the exact spot and compare the bill to the view.
Guilin city itself is a mid-sized, walkable place with lakes, pagodas and a famous noodle breakfast — pleasant, but mostly a base. The real prize is the 83km stretch of the Li River (漓江 Lí Jiāng) downstream to Yangshuo (阳朔 Yángshuò), and the farmland, caves, climbing crags and cycling lanes around it. Two hours north, the Longji rice terraces (龙脊梯田 Lóngjǐ Tītián) stack up entire mountainsides in hand-cut steps. This is one of the few parts of China where the best plan is to slow down and rent a bike.
Fast facts
Best time: March-May for misty, dramatic peaks (and rain); September-November for clear skies and the terraces at harvest gold. July-August is hot, humid and crowded; December-February is grey but cheap and empty.
Getting around: High-speed rail links Guilin to Yangshuo station in about 30 minutes (¥25-35 / $3.50-5), then a shuttle bus (¥20 / $2.80) into Yangshuo town. Guilin Liangjiang Airport (KWL) sits 28km out, with airport buses to Guilin Railway Station for ¥20 ($2.80). In Guilin, taxis start at ¥9 ($1.25) and buses cost ¥1-2. In Yangshuo, rent a bicycle (¥30-50 / $4-7 per day) or an electric scooter (¥60-80 / $8-11 per day). Alipay or WeChat Pay works nearly everywhere; cash is a backup.
Where to stay: Guilin city — around Shanhu Lake (杉湖) and Zhengyang Pedestrian Street, best for one transit night. Yangshuo town — West Street (西街) for noise, food and convenience, ¥150-400 ($21-56). Yangshuo countryside — Yulong River (遇龙河) guesthouses among the peaks, ¥300-800 ($42-110). Hostel dorms in Yangshuo run ¥50-80 ($7-11).
Classic 3-day shape: Day 1 Guilin sights plus an evening lake cruise; Day 2 Li River cruise down to Yangshuo, then West Street for beer fish; Day 3 cycling, rafting and Moon Hill around Yangshuo. Add a fourth day for the Longji terraces.
