Rock Climbing in Yangshuo

Yangshuo is not just scenic karst, it is climbable karst — well over a thousand bolted sport routes on limestone walls scattered across the countryside, and a permanent international climbing community that has been developing them since the 1990s. If you have ever wanted to try climbing outdoors, this is one of the easiest and best places in the world to start.

The rock is steep, pocketed and often overhanging, with tufas and stalactite features that make routes feel three-dimensional rather than flat. Grades run from very easy 5.7 slabs suitable for a first day up to 5.14 test-pieces on the famous Moon Hill (月亮山) arch, where you climb out along the underside of a natural bridge with the valley falling away beneath you.

For beginners, guided half-day sessions cost roughly ¥300-500 ($42-70) including harness, shoes, helmet, ropes, a certified guide and transport out to the crag. You will typically get to a beginner-friendly wall like Wine Bottle (酒瓶山 Jiǔpíng Shān) or Swiss Cheese (瑞士奶酪) and climb four to six routes on top-rope. No experience needed, but reasonable fitness helps.

Season matters more than anything else. Late September through December is the sweet spot — dry, cool, and the rock has friction. Summer is oppressive and sudden downpours shut crags for days.

Book through a dedicated climbing shop in town, not a general tour desk. Ask what the guide-to-client ratio is, whether the guide is certified, and whether English instruction is included. Independent climbers can rent gear and buy the local route guidebook in the same shops.
