Li River Cruise (漓江游船)

The Li River (漓江) cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is the reason most people come to Guangxi in the first place. For four hours, your boat glides past jagged karst peaks rising from emerald rice paddies, water buffalo cooling off at the riverbank, and cormorant fishermen perched on bamboo rafts. It's the landscape on the back of the ¥20 note, and it's genuinely as beautiful as the photos suggest.

The Route: The full cruise covers 83km from Guilin to Yangshuo, taking about 4-5 hours downstream. The most dramatic scenery is in the middle section between Caoping and Xingping, where the karst peaks crowd closest to the river.

Boat Types: Standard tourist boats seat 40-60 people and include a simple lunch (usually rice and stir-fry). They're comfortable enough but get crowded. The alternative is the smaller bamboo raft (actually motorized bamboo-style boats) that run shorter sections, particularly the Xingping-to-Jiumahua stretch. These feel more intimate and let you appreciate the silence.

Timing Matters: The best light for photography is in the morning when mist hangs between the peaks. Departures are around 9:00-9:30 AM from the Zhujiang Pier (竹江码头) in Guilin. You'll arrive in Yangshuo by early afternoon, giving you the rest of the day to explore.

What to Expect: Don't expect wilderness solitude — there are dozens of boats on the river daily, and the commentary is piped through loudspeakers in Chinese. But the scenery is genuinely spectacular, and when the morning mist is burning off the karst towers, it's hard not to be moved. Bring a camera with a zoom lens and binoculars if you have them.
