Yangshuo's West Street (西街) gets all the attention, but the real magic of this small town is in its countryside. Rent a bicycle — or an electric scooter if your legs aren't up for it — and within ten minutes you'll leave the tourist restaurants behind and enter a landscape of flooded rice paddies, karst towers, and sleepy farming villages.

The Best Route: Follow the Yulong River (遇龙河) path south from Yangshuo. This quiet road runs parallel to the river through some of the most photogenic countryside in China. You'll pass water buffalo grazing in paddies, farmers transplanting rice seedlings (in spring), and old stone bridges spanning narrow canals. The full route to Jiuxian Village (旧县村) and back is about 20km and takes 3-4 hours with stops.

What You'll See: The landscape is genuinely stunning — flat green rice paddies stretching to the base of impossibly steep karst peaks, with small farmhouses and bamboo groves scattered between them. In the growing season (May-September), the paddies are brilliant green. During harvest (October), they turn golden.

Practical Advice: Rent from the shops on Chengzhan Road (城站路) rather than the overpriced vendors on West Street. Standard bikes are ¥30-50 for the day; electric bikes are ¥60-80. Bring sunscreen, water, and a phone mount for navigation. The paths are mostly flat but some sections are unpaved — don't wear your nicest shoes.

Avoid: The organized "countryside tours" sold on West Street. They charge ¥200+ for what you can do independently for ¥50, and they funnel you through shopping stops and overpriced restaurants.

Practical tips

  • Avoid the main road to Moon Hill (tourist trap with overpriced restaurants). Instead, ride along the Yulong River (遇龙河) path — quieter, more scenic, and free. Rent from shops on Chengzhan Road rather than West Street (cheaper, better bikes). Electric bikes (¥60-80) save your legs on inclines.
