Xiamen (厦门, Xiàmén) is the rare Chinese city that actually feels relaxed. Sitting on the southeast coast of Fujian, it's a place where colonial-era architecture on Gulangyu Island sits next to Buddhist temples, where students from Xiamen University flood the streets with energy, and where the sound of Minnan dialect mixes with sea breezes. Unlike Beijing's imperial scale or Shanghai's neon intensity, Xiamen invites you to slow down — and that's exactly what you should do.
For independent travelers, Xiamen is an easy win. The city is compact, English signage is better than most Chinese cities (thanks to its history as a treaty port), the metro covers all major sights, and the food scene — particularly Minnan cuisine and seafood — is outstanding. The biggest challenge isn't logistics; it's deciding how many days to give Gulangyu Island.
Fast Facts
Best time to visit: March-May and October-December. Warm, dry, and comfortable (18-28°C). Summer (June-August) is hot, humid, and typhoon-prone; winter (January-February) is mild but can be rainy. Avoid National Day (Oct 1-7) — Gulangyu becomes unbearably crowded.
Getting around: Xiamen's metro has 3 lines covering the main island and parts of the mainland. Tap in with Alipay QR code or buy a Yikatong card. Taxis start at ¥10 ($1.40); most cross-island trips cost ¥20-30 ($3-4). The ferry to Gulangyu is ¥35 ($5) one-way and runs every 20 minutes from Dongdu Wharf. DiDi works well here.
Where to stay: Siming District (思明区) — central, walkable, near Zhongshan Road, ¥200-500 ($28-70). Near Xiamen University — student area, cheap eats, lively atmosphere, ¥150-350 ($21-49). On Gulangyu Island — boutique guesthouses in colonial villas, ¥400-1000 ($55-139), but you'll need to carry luggage up hills.
Classic 3-day shape: Day 1 — Gulangyu Island (full day: colonial architecture, piano museum, beach, sunset). Day 2 — Nanputuo Temple, Xiamen University, Zhongshan Road night market. Day 3 — Huandao Road coastal bike ride, Kulangsu ferry terminal area, or day trip to Tulou clusters.
Getting There
By air: Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN) receives domestic flights from all major cities and some international routes (Southeast Asia). The airport is on the main island, 20 minutes by metro (Line 1) from the city center.
By high-speed rail: Xiamen North Station (厦门北站) on the mainland connects to Fuzhou (1.5h), Shanghai (7h), and Beijing (10h). From the station, take metro Line 1 to the island (30 min).
From Taiwan: Ferries run from Kinmen (金门) to Xiamen — a popular day trip or overnight option for Taiwanese travelers. The ferry takes about 30 minutes.
What to See & Do
Gulangyu Island (鼓浪屿, Gǔlǎngyǔ) — The crown jewel. A car-free island with 19th-century colonial villas, piano museums, narrow lanes, and beaches. The entire island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Plan a full day minimum; many visitors stay overnight. Key spots: Sunlight Rock (日光岩, ¥50/$7), Piano Museum (钢琴博物馆, ¥30/$4), Shuzhuang Garden (菽庄花园, ¥30/$4).
Nanputuo Temple (南普陀寺, Nánpǔtuó Sì) — A working Buddhist temple dating to the Tang Dynasty, free admission. The vegetarian restaurant inside is excellent. Behind the temple, a hiking trail leads to Wulao Peak (五老峰) for panoramic city views.
Xiamen University (厦门大学, Xiàmén Dàxué) — China's most beautiful campus, with a mix of Minnan and Western architecture. Free entry with passport, but daily visitor limits apply — arrive before 10 AM. The campus beach (白城沙滩) is perfect for sunset.
Zhongshan Road (中山路, Zhōngshān Lù) — The main pedestrian shopping street, lined with arcade-style Minnan buildings. Best at night when the food stalls come out. Try oyster omelette (海蛎煎, hǎilì jiān) and spring rolls.
Huandao Road (环岛路, Huándǎo Lù) — A coastal road perfect for biking or walking. Rent a bike at any point along the road and ride the 30km loop. The section from Baicheng Beach (白城沙滩) to Zengcuo'an (曾厝垵) is the most scenic.
Baisha Beach (白沙海滩) — A quieter beach south of the city, popular with locals. Good for a half-day escape from the tourist crowds.
Minnan Food Essentials
Xiamen is the capital of Minnan (闽南) cuisine — a distinct food tradition from southern Fujian that's quite different from Cantonese or Sichuan food.
- Oyster omelette (海蛎煎, hǎilì jiān) — The signature Xiamen dish. Fresh oysters fried with egg, sweet potato starch, and cilantro. Best at Zhongshan Road night market.
- Satay noodles (沙茶面, shāchá miàn) — Peanut-based curry broth with noodles, topped with various meats and seafood. Every shop has its own recipe.
- Buddha Jumps Over the Wall (佛跳墙, fó tiào qiáng) — A luxurious soup with shark fin, abalone, and other premium ingredients. Expensive but worth trying once.
- Spring rolls (春卷, chūnjuǎn) — Xiamen-style, filled with julienned vegetables and meat, fried until crispy.
- Seafood — Fresh from the strait. Grilled squid, steamed fish, crab with ginger vinegar. Head to the fishing ports for the freshest.
Practical Tips
Language: English is more common here than in most Chinese cities, especially on Gulangyu and around the university. But don't expect universal English — download a translation app.
Cash vs. Mobile: Mobile payment (Alipay/WeChat Pay) is universal. Cash is rarely needed except at some small food stalls.
Gulangyu booking: Tickets must be booked online in advance during peak seasons (National Day, summer). Use the official WeChat mini-program "厦门轮渡有限公司" to book ferry tickets.
Day trips: The Fujian Tulou (福建土楼) — round earthen buildings — are a UNESCO site about 3 hours from Xiamen. Consider a day trip or overnight if you have extra time.
