Gulangyu Island (鼓浪屿, Gǔlǎngyǔ) is Xiamen's crown jewel — a car-free island where 19th-century colonial architecture sits alongside Minnan temples, where piano music drifts from historic villas, and where narrow lanes lead to hidden beaches and sunset viewpoints. The entire island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it deserves a full day minimum.

Getting There

Take the ferry from Dongdu Wharf (东渡邮轮中心码头) — ¥35 ($5) one-way, runs every 20 minutes. The ride takes about 20 minutes. During peak seasons (National Day, summer), tickets must be booked online in advance via the WeChat mini-program "厦门轮渡有限公司".

What to See

Sunlight Rock (日光岩, Rìguāng Yán) — The island's highest point (92m). Climb to the top for 360° views of the island, Xiamen city, and the Taiwan Strait. ¥50 ($7). Arrive early to beat the crowds.

Piano Museum (钢琴博物馆, Gāngqín Bówùguǎn) — Houses over 100 historic pianos from around the world, including rare 19th-century instruments. The museum is in a beautiful colonial villa overlooking the harbor. ¥30 ($4).

Shuzhuang Garden (菽庄花园, Shūzhuāng Huāyuán) — A classical Chinese garden built in 1931, featuring a unique design that incorporates the ocean into the garden. The garden leads to a small beach. ¥30 ($4).

Colony Historical Sites — Over 900 historic buildings from 13 countries, including British, American, and Japanese consulates. Wander randomly — the best discoveries are off the main paths.

Practical Tips

  • The island is hilly with lots of stairs — wear comfortable shoes
  • Most guesthouses are in converted colonial villas — charming but can be pricey (¥400-1000/night)
  • The best sunset spot is from the beach near Shuzhuang Garden
  • Allow 4-6 hours minimum; overnight stays are recommended for photography enthusiasts

Practical tips
