Jinan (济南), the capital of Shandong Province, is known as the "City of Springs" (泉城) for its 72 natural artesian springs that bubble up through the city center. The most famous, Baotu Spring (趵突泉), has been flowing for over 2,700 years.
While not as touristed as Beijing or Shanghai, Jinan offers a relaxed pace, beautiful water-themed parks, and some of the best cuisine in northern China. Shandong cuisine (鲁菜) is one of China's Eight Great Cuisines, and Jinan is its spiritual home.
Why Jinan?
The springs. Unlike any other Chinese city, Jinan's waterways are fed by natural underground springs. Baotu Spring, Black Tiger Spring, and the springs of Daming Lake create a unique waterscape in the middle of a bustling city.
The food. Shandong cuisine is bold and flavorful — braised sea cucumber, sweet and sour carp,葱烧海参 (scallions with sea cucumber). The street food is equally impressive, with 煎饼 (jianbing) and 甜沫 (sweet millet porridge) as local favorites.
The location. Jinan is a convenient stop between Beijing and Shanghai on the high-speed rail line. It's also the gateway to Taishan (Mount Tai), one of China's Five Sacred Mountains.
Getting There
By high-speed rail:
- From Beijing: 1.5 hours, ¥185 ($26)
- From Shanghai: 3 hours, ¥350 ($49)
- From Qingdao: 1.5 hours, ¥120 ($17)
By air: Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport (TNA) with domestic flights from most major cities.
