Sichuan Food & Nature Route: Chengdu, Leshan & Jiuzhaigou
The ultimate Sichuan experience — fiery hotpot in Chengdu, the world's largest Buddha in Leshan, and the most colorful lakes on Earth in Jiuzhaigou.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Chengdu
Arrival & Hotpot Night

Chengdu People's Park (人民公园)
The living room of Chengdu — retirees practicing tai chi, playing chess, and sipping tea in bamboo chairs under ancient trees. Sit in Heming Teahouse (鹤鸣茶社, est. 1923) and watch Chengdu's legendary laid-back lifestyle unfold around you.

Jinli Ancient Street (锦里古街)
A 550-meter restored Qing dynasty street — red lanterns, traditional architecture, and every Sichuan snack you've ever heard of (and some you haven't). Try 三大炮 (three-shot glutinous rice balls) and 糖油果子 (sugar oil fruits).

Sichuan Hotpot (四川火锅)
The meal that defines Sichuan — a bubbling cauldron of chili oil, Sichuan peppercorns (花椒), and dried chilies. Raw ingredients arrive on plates: thin-sliced beef tripe (毛肚), duck blood (鸭血), lotus root, and hand-pulled noodles. Dip, swirl, count to 15, eat. Your mouth will thank you even as it burns.
Pandas & Teahouse

Giant Panda Base (大熊猫繁育研究基地)
The world's largest panda breeding center — 200+ giant pandas in naturalistic habitats. Arrive at 7:30 AM when pandas are most active: climbing trees, rolling in leaves, and munching bamboo with total disregard for the thousands of tourists watching. Baby pandas in the nursery are peak cute.

Heming Teahouse (鹤鸣茶社)
Chengdu's oldest teahouse (est. 1923) — a sprawling outdoor courtyard where locals have been sipping pu'er tea and playing mahjong for a century. Ear cleaning vendors, foot massage therapists, and fortune tellers circulate among the bamboo chairs. This is authentic Chengdu.

Wuhou Shrine (武侯祠)
The only temple in China dedicated to both an emperor and his prime minister — built to honor Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang from the Three Kingdoms era. The red-walled corridor is one of the most photographed spots in Chengdu.
Street Food Deep Dive

Kuanzhai Alley (宽窄巷子)
Three parallel alleys (宽巷子, 窄巷子, 井巷子) — the best-preserved Qing dynasty residential district in Chengdu. Each alley has its own personality: wide alley for traditional culture, narrow alley for trendy boutiques, well alley for street art. Don't miss the bowl-scraping noodles (碗碗面).

Yulin Road Night Market (玉林路夜市)
Where Chengdu's food scene gets real — not tourist-friendly snacks, but the actual food locals eat. 烤串 (grilled skewers), 冒菜 (spicy hot pot for one), 钵钵鸡 (cold chicken in chili oil), and 冰粉 (bingfen, the Sichuan dessert that will ruin all other desserts).

Sichuan Cooking Class (烹饪课)
Learn to make mapo tofu (麻婆豆腐), kung pao chicken (宫保鸡丁), and dan dan noodles (担担面) from scratch — starting at the morning market selecting ingredients, then cooking in a Sichuan kitchen. You'll never look at takeout the same way.
Leshan
Chengdu → Leshan

Leshan Giant Buddha (乐山大佛)
The world's largest stone Buddha — 71 meters tall, carved into a cliff face over 90 years (713-803 AD). The engineering is mind-boggling: the Buddha's shoulders are 28 meters wide, each ear is 7 meters long, and a hidden drainage system inside has kept it intact for 1,200 years. You can only see the full Buddha from across the river.

Nine Bend Lingyun Plank Road (九曲栈道)
A vertigo-inducing plank road carved into the cliff face beside the Buddha — you descend from the Buddha's head to his feet via a series of narrow, winding paths. The perspective shift as you go from eye-level with the Buddha's ear down to his toes is unforgettable.

Wuyou Temple (乌尤寺)
A peaceful Buddhist temple on a hill overlooking the confluence of three rivers. Fewer tourists, more atmosphere. The temple gardens have stunning views of the Giant Buddha from across the water — the best angle for photos.
Jiuzhaigou
Leshan → Jiuzhaigou

Shuzheng Valley Evening Walk (树正沟)
A gentle evening stroll through the first valley of Jiuzhaigou — Shuzheng Lakes shimmer in twilight colors, and the cascading waterfalls between each lake create a natural symphony. The Zhuo Ma waterfall is especially beautiful in the golden hour.
Jiuzhai Valley Full Day

Mirror Lake (镜海)
The most serene spot in Jiuzhaigou — the lake is so still that every tree, every mountain, every cloud is perfectly reflected on its surface. The boundary between reality and reflection vanishes. Best visited in the morning before wind disturbs the water.

Five Flower Lake (五花海)
The most colorful lake on Earth — five distinct colors from mineral deposits, algae, and fallen trees visible through water so clear you can count the pebbles 30 meters down. In autumn, golden larch trees frame the turquoise water like a painting.

Nuorilang Waterfall (诺日朗瀑布)
The widest travertine waterfall in China — 270 meters of water cascading over a cliff into a turquoise pool below. The sound is thunderous, the spray is cooling, and the rainbow in afternoon light is guaranteed. This is the waterfall from Chinese nature documentaries.

Pearl Beach (珍珠滩)
A wide, shallow waterfall where water bubbles over a calcite bed, creating millions of tiny splashes that look like scattered pearls. This is where the opening scene of the 1986 TV series Journey to the West was filmed.
Zechawa & Panda Lakes

Long Lake (长海)
Jiuzhaigou's largest and highest lake — a deep blue crescent at 3,060 meters, surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The water level rises and falls seasonally with no visible inlet or outlet — a geological mystery that locals explain with a legend about a dragon living at the bottom.

Panda Lake (熊猫海)
Named for the giant pandas that once drank here — the lake's surface alternates between deep blue and emerald green depending on the angle. In winter, the surrounding peaks are snow-covered, creating a black-and-white contrast that resembles panda coloring.

Arrow Bamboo Lake (箭竹海)
A serene lake backed by arrow bamboo groves — the bamboo was historically used to make arrows, hence the name. The lake has several small islands and the water is so clear that submerged trees are visible, creating an underwater forest effect.
Departure

Sunrise at Mirror Lake
Return to Mirror Lake for the sunrise you missed yesterday — the first light hitting the reflected peaks, the mist lifting off the water, and the silence broken only by birdsong. This is the image you'll carry home.

Last Walk Through Nuorilang
A final pass through the widest waterfall — the morning light creates rainbows in the spray, and the autumn colors are at their most vivid. Say goodbye to the turquoise water, the golden larches, and the snow-capped peaks.
