Haikou Travel Guide: Tropical Capital of Hainan Island

Haikou (海口), capital of Hainan Province, sits on the northern coast of Hainan Island - China's tropical paradise. The city combines old Chinese arcade architecture (骑楼) with volcanic landscapes, palm-lined beaches, and a laid-back island atmosphere.

Hainan is China's answer to Hawaii, and Haikou is the gateway. While Sanya gets the beach resort crowds, Haikou offers a more authentic Chinese island experience.

Why Haikou?

The weather. Hainan's tropical climate means warm weather year-round. Winter temperatures rarely drop below 18°C (64°F).

The architecture. Qilou Old Street (骑楼老街) features a unique blend of Chinese and Southeast Asian arcade architecture.

The food. Hainan chicken rice (海南鸡饭) originated here. The night markets serve incredible tropical seafood.
