Guiyang Travel Guide: Guizhou's Capital & Gateway to Waterfalls

Guiyang (贵阳), capital of Guizhou Province, sits in a mountain basin at 1,100 meters elevation, giving it one of China's most pleasant climates — cool summers, mild winters, and none of the extreme heat found in neighboring provinces.

The city is surrounded by dramatic karst mountains and is the cultural heart of Guizhou's 18 ethnic minority groups, including the Miao, Dong, and Buyi peoples. It's also the main gateway to Huangguoshu Waterfall, one of Asia's largest waterfalls.

Why Guiyang?

The climate. Average summer temperature is just 24°C (75°F) — one of China's coolest provincial capitals. No air conditioning needed.

The minorities. Guizhou has 18 ethnic minority groups, and Guiyang is the best base to experience their cultures, festivals, and crafts.

The food. Guizhou cuisine is fiery and sour — sour soup fish (酸汤鱼), spicy noodles, and fermented tofu. Some of China's most underrated food.

The waterfalls. Huangguoshu Waterfall, one of Asia's largest, is just 2 hours from Guiyang.

By air: Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport (KWE) with extensive domestic flights.

Best Areas to Stay

Nanming District (南明区) — City center, near Jiaxiu Tower and most attractions.

Yunyan District (云岩区) — Near Qianling Mountain, good for nature lovers.

Must-See Attractions

Jiaxiu Tower (甲秀楼)

A three-story pavilion on the Nanming River, built in 1598. The symbol of Guiyang and best viewed at night when illuminated. Free to enter.

Qianling Mountain (黔灵山)

A 435-hectare urban park with wild monkeys, Taoist temples, and hiking trails. The monkeys are famously bold. Free entry.

Qingyan Ancient Town (青岩古镇)

A 600-year-old military town with stone architecture, local snacks, and a mix of Buddhist, Taoist, and Catholic temples. ¥10 ($1.40).

Huangguoshu Waterfall (黄果树瀑布)

One of Asia's largest waterfalls — 77 meters tall and 101 meters wide. You can walk behind the falls. 2 hours from Guiyang by bus. ¥160 ($22).

Practical Tips

Best time: April-May or September-October. Summers are cool and pleasant.
Transport: Metro covers main attractions. Inter-city buses connect to waterfalls and minority villages.
Food budget: ¥30-60 ($4-8) per meal. The sour soup fish is a must-try.
Combine with: Huangguoshu Waterfall (2h), Kaili (1h by HSR) for minority villages.
