Zhengzhou Travel Guide: Shaolin Kung Fu, Ancient Capital & Yellow River

Zhengzhou (郑州), capital of Henan Province, sits at the crossroads of ancient and modern China. This is where Chinese civilization began — the Yellow River valley around Zhengzhou was home to some of the earliest Chinese settlements, and the city served as capital for multiple dynasties.

For most travelers, Zhengzhou is a gateway to Shaolin Temple (1.5 hours away) and the ancient capital of Kaifeng (40 minutes by train). But the city itself offers world-class museums, historic pagodas, and a front-row seat to the mighty Yellow River.

Why Zhengzhou?

The history. Henan Province contains more historical sites than any other province in China. Zhengzhou's Henan Museum houses one of the country's finest collections of ancient bronzes, jade, and terracotta.

Shaolin Temple. The birthplace of Zen Buddhism and Chinese kung fu is just 90 minutes from Zhengzhou. Watch monks perform martial arts demonstrations in the shadow of Songshan Mountain.

The Yellow River. China's "Mother River" flows through Zhengzhou's northern suburbs. The Yellow River Scenic Area offers dramatic views of the muddy, powerful river that shaped Chinese civilization.

Shaolin Temple (少林寺)

The birthplace of Zen Buddhism and Shaolin kung fu. Watch martial arts demonstrations, explore ancient halls, and visit the Forest of Pagodas — over 240 tomb pagodas of monks spanning 1,500 years. ¥80 ($11) entry; 1.5 hours from Zhengzhou by bus.

Henan Museum (河南博物馆)

One of China's great museums, with collections spanning from prehistoric times through the Tang Dynasty. The ancient bronzes and musical instruments are extraordinary. Free entry (reservation required).

Erqi Pagoda (二七纪念塔)

The twin-tower pagoda is Zhengzhou's most recognizable landmark, built in 1971 to commemorate a 1923 labor strike. The observation deck offers city views. ¥10 ($1.40).

Yellow River Scenic Area (黄河风景名胜区)

Dramatic views of the Yellow River from a clifftop park. See the massive Mother Spring statue and take a cable car over the river. ¥60 ($8.40).

Practical Tips

• Best time: April-May or September-October. Summers are hot (35°C+); winters are cold and dry.
