Lugu Lake (泸沽湖)

Lugu Lake (泸沽湖, Lúgū Hú) is a 2,685-meter-high alpine lake straddling the Yunnan-Sichuan border, roughly 200 km (124 mi) northeast of Lijiang. It's not just dramatic scenery — turquoise water ringed by mountains — it's also home to the Mosuo (摩梭) people, one of the world's few remaining matriarchal societies.

The Mosuo and walking marriage. Mosuo families are organized around women: property passes through the female line, and traditional couples practice walking marriage (走婚, zǒuhūn) — the man visits the woman's home at night and returns to his mother's house by morning. Younger generations increasingly choose conventional marriage, but the matrilineal culture still shapes daily life. A family visit (¥20/$3) is the best way to understand it firsthand.

What to do. A boat ride on a Mosuo dugout canoe (猪槽船, zhūcáochuán) is the essential experience — ¥30-200 ($4-28) depending on route. In winter (Dec-Feb), the morning mist over the lake at sunrise is otherworldly. From May to October, white water flowers carpet the surface, peaking in July and August. The 300-meter Walking Marriage Bridge crosses the Grass Sea (草海, Cǎohǎi), a floating wetland on the lake's southeastern edge. Hike up Gemu Goddess Mountain (3,754m) for a panoramic view of the whole lake — a chairlift handles most of the climb, leaving a 20-30 minute walk to the top.

Practical notes. This is not a day trip. The drive from Lijiang takes 3.5-4 hours each way on winding roads. Budget at least one overnight — Daluoshui Village has the most hotels and restaurants. A bonfire party (¥30/$4) runs most nights if you want to join Mosuo singing and dancing, though it's more performance than ceremony these days.
