Lijiang: Ancient Towns, Snow Mountains & the Naxi Kingdom

Lijiang (丽江, Lìjiāng) sits at 2,400m on a highland plateau in northwest Yunnan, with the 5,596m Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山, Yùlóng Xuěshān) looming over it like a permanent weather system. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, crisscrossed by canals fed by mountain runoff, and its cobblestone lanes have been polished smooth by a millennium of mule caravans on the Tea Horse Road (茶马古道, Chámǎ Gǔdào). The Naxi (纳西, Nàxī) people built this city and still form its cultural backbone — their Dongba pictographs are the world's only living hieroglyphic script, and you will see the characters carved on shop signs and painted on walls everywhere.

The reality check: Lijiang Old Town is also one of the most aggressively commercialized historic districts in China. Brace for drum-shop DJs, photo studios renting "princess" costumes, and snack stalls charging ¥25 ($3.50) for a stick of grilled squid. But step out of Dayan (大研, the main Old Town) and the Lijiang you came for still exists: in the quiet lanes of Shuhe (束河, Shùhé), the 600-year-old frescoes of Baisha (白沙, Báishā), the alpine meadows beneath Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and the roaring narrows of Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡, Hǔtiào Xiá). Lijiang is also the natural hub of a northern Yunnan loop — an hour and a half by train from Dali, four hours by bus from Shangri-La — so even if you only use it as a base, you will pass through.

Best time to visit: March–May for dry, sunny days (15–24°C / 59–75°F) and blooming rhododendrons on the mountain. September–November for crisp air, golden light, and clear snow-peak views. June–August is the rainy season — the mountain may disappear behind cloud for days, and trails in Tiger Leaping Gorge can close after heavy rain. December–February is dry and cold (nights below freezing), but tourist numbers drop and hotels discount heavily.

Getting here: Lijiang Sanyi Airport (LJG) sits 29km south of the Old Town; direct flights from Kunming (1 hour), Chengdu (1.5 hours), Beijing, Shanghai, and a handful of international routes (Bangkok, Singapore, Seoul). Airport bus to the Old Town runs ¥20 ($2.80); taxi is ¥80–100 ($11–14). High-speed train from Kunming takes 3–3.5 hours (¥220–350 ($31–49) second class) and arrives at Lijiang Railway Station 8km south of town — bus ¥2 ($0.28) or taxi ¥30–40 ($4.20–5.60) to the Old Town. Long-distance buses connect from Dali (3 hours, ¥60–80 ($8.40–11)) and Shangri-La (3.5–4 hours, ¥70–90 ($9.80–12.60)).

Getting around: No metro. Taxis start at ¥8 ($1.10) and most Old Town trips stay under ¥20 ($2.80). DiDi works through Alipay. For the Old Town itself, you walk — cobblestone lanes are vehicle-free. To reach Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (25km north), Tiger Leaping Gorge (80km north), or Baisha Village (12km north), hire a private car for the day: ¥300–400 ($42–56) negotiated with a driver, or book through your guesthouse. E-bike rental for local exploration runs ¥50–80 ($7–11) per day — but the mountain and gorge roads are steep and winding; do not attempt on two wheels unless you know what you are doing.

Where to stay: Dayan Old Town (大研古城) for maximum convenience — guesthouses ¥100–300 ($14–42), boutique Naxi courtyard hotels ¥400–800 ($56–112). Pick a place near South Gate (南门) if you have luggage; the cobblestones destroy wheeled suitcases and most alleys are not vehicle-accessible. Shuhe Ancient Town (束河古镇) for a quieter, less commercial version of Old Town living, ¥200–600 ($28–84). Baisha Village (白沙村) for the real rural Naxi experience with mountain views from your window, ¥150–400 ($21–56). Hostel dorms in Dayan run ¥40–70 ($5.60–9.80).

Classic 2–3 day shape: Day 1 — explore Dayan Old Town in the morning (Mu Mansion ¥40 ($5.60), Sifang Square, Wangu Tower ¥50 ($7)), Black Dragon Pool Park (黑龙潭, ¥60 ($8.40) or free with Old Town maintenance receipt) for the classic snow-mountain-reflection photo, then Naxi Ancient Music performance in the evening (¥120–180 ($17–25)). Day 2 — full day at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain: cable car to Glacier Park at 4,506m (¥180 ($25), book 1–2 days ahead on WeChat mini-program), Blue Moon Valley (蓝月谷, free after mountain entry ¥100 ($14)), impression Lijiang outdoor show (¥280 ($39)). Day 3 — Tiger Leaping Gorge day trip (entry ¥65 ($9)), the Upper Gorge viewpoint is a 1km walk from the parking lot; or a slower day at Baisha frescoes (¥30 ($4.20)) and Shuhe Ancient Town. Add 2 extra days for Lugu Lake (泸沽湖, Lúgū Hú), a 4-hour drive each way.

Watch out for: Altitude sickness is real — Jade Dragon Snow Mountain's cable car drops you at 4,506m (14,783ft); ascend slowly, hydrate, and descend immediately if you feel dizzy or breathless. The Old Town "maintenance fee" (¥50 ($7)) is inconsistently enforced — some guesthouses collect it, others ignore it; if asked, produce a receipt from a paid attraction like Black Dragon Pool. "Tea ceremony" invitations from friendly strangers on the street are a known scam — you will sit through a 30-minute sales pitch and be charged ¥200+ ($28+) for tea you did not ask for. Lashihai Lake (拉市海) horse riding is the most-reported scam in Lijiang: drivers and touts steer you to stables that charge ¥300–500+ ($42–70+) for a short, unremarkable ride; if you want to ride, book through your guesthouse and agree the price in advance. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain tickets sell out in peak season — buy 1–2 days ahead via the "丽江旅游集团" WeChat mini-program. And pack a warm layer year-round: at 2,400m, evenings turn cold even in July.
