Lanzhou (兰州), capital of Gansu Province, sits in a narrow valley through which the Yellow River flows. It is the starting point of the ancient Silk Road and one of China's most underrated food cities.
The city is famous for Lanzhou beef noodles (兰州牛肉面), considered by many to be China's perfect breakfast. Hand-pulled noodles in aromatic beef broth, served with chili oil and pickled radish, are a daily ritual for millions.
Why Lanzhou?
The noodles. Lanzhou beef noodles are arguably China's most beloved breakfast. Every neighborhood has its own noodle shop with a loyal following.
The Yellow River. Lanzhou is the only major Chinese city where the Yellow River flows through the center.
Silk Road heritage. As the gateway to the Hexi Corridor, Lanzhou was the first stop on the Silk Road heading west.

Must-See Attractions
Zhongshan Bridge (中山桥)
The first permanent bridge over the Yellow River, built in 1909 with German engineering. Beautiful at night when illuminated. Free.
White Pagoda Mountain (白塔山)
A hillside park with a white Tibetan pagoda and panoramic views of the Yellow River. Free entry.
Gansu Museum (甘肃博物馆)
World-class museum with Silk Road artifacts, including the famous Galloping Horse bronze. Free (reservation required).
Water Wheel Park (水车博览园)
Giant traditional water wheels on the Yellow River banks, some from the Ming Dynasty. ¥10 ($1.40).
Practical Tips
- Best time: May-October. Winters are cold and dry.
- Food: Beef noodles for breakfast ¥12-15 ($1.70-2.10). Try thin noodles (细面).
- Combine with: Xining (1.5h) and Zhangye (2h) for a Gansu road trip.
