Jiuzhaigou (九寨沟) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern Sichuan, famous for its multicolored lakes, cascading waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks. The valley's turquoise, emerald, and gold-tinted waters create a landscape that looks almost unreal.
Why Jiuzhaigou?
The lakes. Over 100 lakes with impossibly clear water in shades of turquoise, emerald, and gold. The water is so clear you can see the bottom even at 30 meters depth.
The waterfalls. Nuorilang Waterfall is one of the widest limestone waterfalls in the world. Pearl Shoal Waterfall creates a curtain of white water over a limestone shelf.
The seasons. Autumn brings explosive foliage colors reflected in the lakes. Winter transforms the waterfalls into massive ice formations.
Getting There
- From Chengdu: 10 hours by bus (¥150/$21) or 1 hour by flight to Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (JZH)

Nuorilang Waterfall (诺日朗瀑布)
One of the widest limestone waterfalls in the world - 270 meters wide and 24.5 meters tall.
Mirror Lake (镜海)
A perfectly still lake that reflects the surrounding mountains and forests like a mirror.

- Best time: September-November for autumn colors. The park limits daily visitors.
- Book early: Tickets must be reserved online in advance, especially for autumn.
- Combine with: Huanglong (1 hour away) for a two-day nature trip.
