Saint Sophia Cathedral (圣索菲亚大教堂)

Saint Sophia Cathedral (圣索菲亚大教堂, Shèngsuǒfēiyà Dàjiàotáng) is Harbin's most iconic building — a stunning Russian Orthodox church that has watched over the city for over a century.

What to See

The Exterior — A green onion dome rises above red brick walls. The cathedral is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the Far East — a reminder of Harbin's Russian heritage.

The Museum — Inside, the cathedral has been converted into a museum of Harbin's history. Exhibits trace the city's transformation from a small village to a Russian-built city to a modern Chinese metropolis.

The Square — The square in front of the cathedral is a popular gathering spot. In winter, ice sculptures surround the building. In summer, locals dance and play music.
