Harbin (哈尔滨, Hā'ěrbīn) — China's Ice City — sits on the frozen banks of the Songhua River in northeast China. Built by Russian engineers in the 1890s, Harbin blends Chinese and Russian cultures in a way found nowhere else in China.
Why Visit Harbin?
The Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival is the world's largest winter festival — massive ice buildings illuminated from within create a glowing fantasy world. But Harbin is worth visiting year-round: Russian architecture, excellent beer, and a frontier spirit that feels different from the rest of China.
Top Attractions
Central Street (中央大街) — A 1.4km pedestrian street lined with Russian, Art Nouveau, and Baroque buildings. The street is paved with granite cobblestones and ends at the Songhua River.
Ice and Snow World (冰雪大世界) — The world's largest ice festival — massive buildings carved from river ice and illuminated with colored lights. Open January-March.
Saint Sophia Cathedral (圣索菲亚大教堂) — A stunning Russian Orthodox cathedral built in 1907. Now a museum of Harbin's history.
Songhua River (松花江) — In winter, the frozen river becomes a playground for ice skating, ice sailing, and horse-drawn sleighs. In summer, river cruises offer relief from the heat.
Sun Island (太阳岛) — A large park on an island in the Songhua River. In winter, it hosts the Snow Sculpture Expo — massive sculptures carved from compacted snow.

Best Time to Visit: January-February for the Ice Festival. September-October for autumn colors.
Getting There: Direct flights from most Chinese cities. High-speed train from Beijing (8 hours).
Getting Around: Metro, buses, and taxis. The city is very cold in winter — dress warmly.
