Fuzhou (福州), the capital of Fujian Province, is known as the "Banyan City" (榕城) for the massive banyan trees that shade its streets. While neighboring Xiamen gets more tourist attention, Fuzhou offers a more authentic Fujian experience — hot springs, historic lanes, and some of the best cuisine in southern China.
The city has been Fujian's political and cultural center for over 2,000 years, and its old quarters still contain beautifully preserved Ming and Qing dynasty architecture.
Why Fuzhou?
The hot springs. Fuzhou sits atop natural hot springs, and many hotels have on-site hot spring baths. It's one of China's best cities for a spa weekend.
The food. Fujian cuisine (闽菜) is known for its umami-rich soups, seafood, and sweet-savory flavors. Fuzhou is the best place to try it — from Buddhist jump over the wall (佛跳墙) to fish ball noodles.
The heritage. The Three Lanes and Seven Hallways (三坊七巷) is one of China's best-preserved historic districts, with lanes dating to the Tang Dynasty.

By air: Fuzhou Changle International Airport (FOC) with extensive domestic and some international flights.
Best Areas to Stay
Gulou District (鼓楼区) — City center, walking distance to Three Lanes and Seven Hallways. Best for sightseeing.
Taijiang District (台江区) — Near the Min River, good for food lovers and night markets.
Must-See Attractions
Three Lanes and Seven Hallways (三坊七巷)
A 1,000-year-old historic district with narrow lanes and traditional Fujian architecture. The birthplace of many famous Chinese intellectuals. Free to wander; some mansions charge ¥20-30 ($2.80-4.20).
Yushan Mountain (于山)
A small mountain in the city center with Taoist temples, ancient banyan trees, and panoramic views from the summit. Free entry.
Min River Night Cruise (闽江夜游)
A boat ride on the Min River, passing under illuminated bridges and past the city skyline. ¥80-120 ($11-17).
Fuzhou Hot Springs (福州温泉)
Natural hot springs in the city center. Many hotels offer private hot spring rooms. Public options include Hotspring World (¥128/$18).
Practical Tips
- Best time: March-May or September-November. Summers are hot and humid; typhoon season is July-September.
- Language: Fujian dialect (Minnan) is widely spoken. Mandarin understood by most.
- Transport: Metro covers main attractions. Taxis are affordable.
- Combine with: Xiamen (1.5h by HSR) or Wuyishan (1.5h by HSR) for a Fujian trip.
