Zhangjiajie (张家界, Zhāngjiājiè) is a landscape that seems to belong to another world — thousands of sandstone pillars rising from misty valleys, the world's highest glass bridge, and scenery that inspired the movie Avatar.
Why Visit Zhangjiajie?
The Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is home to over 3,000 sandstone pillars, some over 200 meters tall. These pillars inspired the floating mountains in Avatar. The area also has the world's highest glass bridge, glass-bottomed skywalks, and some of the most dramatic scenery in China.
Top Attractions
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park — The main attraction — thousands of sandstone pillars rising from misty valleys. The Yuanjiajie Scenic Area has the most dramatic pillars.
Tianmen Mountain (天门山) — A mountain with a natural arch — Tianmen Cave — and the world's longest cable car ride. The glass skywalk along the cliff face is thrilling.
Glass Bridge — The world's highest glass bridge — 430 meters long and 300 meters above a canyon. Walking across it is not for the faint-hearted.
Grand Canyon (大峡谷) — A deep canyon with waterfalls, caves, and the glass bridge. The canyon boat ride offers stunning views.
Baofeng Lake (宝峰湖) — A turquoise lake surrounded by cliffs — a peaceful contrast to the dramatic pillars.
Practical Information
Best Time to Visit: April-October (warm and clear). Winter has snow but some attractions close.
Getting There: Fly to Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport or take train to Zhangjiajie Station.
Getting Around: Park shuttle buses, cable cars, and taxis. The park is huge — allow 2-3 days.
Currency: Chinese Yuan (CNY). Mobile payment (Alipay, WeChat Pay) is ubiquitous.
