Cycling the Xi'an City Wall is one of those travel experiences that sounds gimmicky in a brochure but turns out to be genuinely wonderful. You're pedaling a 13.7-kilometer loop along the top of a 14th-century fortification, 12 meters wide and 12 meters high, with the old city spread out on one side and modern Xi'an rising on the other. The breeze is good, the views are great, and there's something deeply satisfying about riding a bicycle where soldiers once marched.
Rent your bike at the South Gate (永宁门, Yongning Gate). This is the most convenient entry point, easily reached from Bell Tower area via the south-facing subway stop (Line 2). Bikes are single-speed cruisers — nothing fancy, but perfectly adequate for the flat, paved surface on top of the wall. They cost ¥45 for two hours, which is plenty for the full circuit if you don't dawdle too much. Two-person bikes are available if you're traveling with a partner and enjoy the comedy of coordinated pedaling.
The wall has 98 watchtowers and four main gate complexes, each more elaborate than the last. The South Gate is the grandest, with a multi-layered fortification system including a barbican, archery tower, and gate tower. Stop here for photos — the layered walls and moat below make for dramatic compositions.
Timing matters. The wall is open until 10 PM at the South Gate, and an evening ride is a completely different experience from a daytime one. The wall is illuminated with lanterns, the city lights spread out around you, and the summer heat has broken. If you're visiting between May and September, start your ride around 6 PM and finish in the dusk.
The surface is flat but occasionally bumpy where restoration sections meet original Ming-dynasty stonework. Keep your pace moderate — the wall has no guardrails, and a few tourists take tumble every year leaning too far over the edge for selfies. Common sense goes a long way.
Practical tips
- Rent a bike at the South Gate (永宁门) — ¥45 for 2 hours, ¥90 for 3 hours. The full circuit is 13.7km and takes about 1.5 hours at a leisurely pace. Late afternoon rides reward you with golden hour light and the wall's lanterns coming alive after dark.
