The Big Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔, Dà Yàntǎ) was built in 652 AD inside Da Ci'en Temple (大慈恩寺) to house the Buddhist sutras that the monk Xuanzang (玄奘, Xuánzàng) carried back from a seventeen-year overland journey to India — the trip that became the folk epic Journey to the West. Xuanzang spent his remaining years here translating them. That makes this squat, tapering brick tower one of the most historically loaded structures in China, and it still anchors the whole southern half of Xi'an: streets, malls, and metro stops are all named after it.
The temple grounds are genuinely calming, with incense smoke, monks going about actual business, and courtyards that empty out mid-afternoon. Climbing the pagoda is optional. It's seven narrow floors of steep wooden stairs, and the reward is a hazy grid view of high-rises rather than anything picturesque — skip it if your legs are already tired from the city wall, or if the air quality is bad.
The better reason to come is the evening. The North Plaza (大雁塔北广场) holds one of Asia's largest musical fountains, and the show — usually 20:30, free, no ticket — is unexpectedly good: hundreds of jets choreographed to music with the floodlit pagoda behind. Thousands of locals show up. Combine it with dinner on the plaza's edge and you get one of Xi'an's best evenings for the price of a metro fare.
Getting there: Metro Line 3 or 4 to Dayanta (大雁塔). The Shaanxi History Museum is a 15-minute walk northwest, making the two an easy pairing.
Practical tips
- Two separate tickets: ¥40 gets you into Da Ci'en Temple grounds, another ¥30 buys the climb up seven storeys of steep wooden stairs.
- The North Plaza fountain show is outside the paid area — you can watch it for free without buying anything.
- Confirm show times the same day at your hotel; schedules shift seasonally and shows are cancelled in high wind or winter freeze.
- Metro Line 3 or 4 to Dayanta (大雁塔) station, then a 5-minute walk.
- Arrive by 19:45 for a front-row spot at the fountain, or watch from the raised steps at the plaza's north end for a better overall view.
