Urumqi Grand Bazaar (新疆国际大巴扎)

The Grand Bazaar (大巴扎, Dà Bāzhā) is Urumqi's most famous attraction and the largest bazaar in Central Asia. Built in 2003 in traditional Islamic architectural style, it's a massive complex where Uyghur merchants sell everything from spices to carpets to dried fruits.

What to See & Buy

Spice Market — The ground floor is a spice heaven. Cumin, chili, saffron, and dozens of Uyghur spice blends. The smell alone is worth the visit.

Carpet Section — Uyghur carpets are hand-woven with geometric patterns. Authentic ones cost ¥2000-10000 ($280-1400); machine-made copies are ¥100-500 ($14-70).

Dried Fruits — Xinjiang produces 80% of China's dried fruits. Buy raisins, apricots, figs, and almonds. Negotiate bulk prices.

Food Stalls — The second floor has food stalls serving lamb kebabs, hand-pulled noodles, and Uyghur tea. The best and cheapest food in the bazaar.

Uyghur Music — Traditional instruments, CDs, and sometimes live performances.

Practical Tips

• The bazaar is touristy but authentic — locals shop here too
• Bargain hard — start at 50% of asking price and work up
• The food stalls on the second floor are the best value
• Security checks at all entrances — carry your passport
• Best time: late afternoon when it's cooler and less crowded
