Tianshan Heavenly Lake (天山天池, Tiānshān Tiānchí) is Xinjiang's most famous natural attraction — a crystal-clear alpine lake sitting at 1,910 meters in the Tianshan Mountains. The lake is sacred in Uyghur and Kazakh culture, believed to be where the Queen Mother of the West bathes.
What to See
The Lake — The lake is 3.5km long, 1km wide, and 100 meters deep. The water is so clear you can see the bottom. In summer, the surrounding peaks are snow-capped; in autumn, the forests turn gold.
Kazakh Yurts — Kazakh nomads live in yurts around the lake. You can visit, drink tea, and learn about their culture.
Hiking — The lake has a perimeter trail (about 10km) that takes 2-3 hours. The views from different angles are spectacular.
Boat Ride — A boat takes you across the lake to the far shore, where you can hike to a waterfall.
Getting There
Tour bus — From Urumqi, take the tour bus from the train station (¥15/$2 one-way, 2 hours). The bus goes directly to the lake entrance.
Private car — Hire a car for ¥300-500 ($42-70) round trip. More flexible, can stop at scenic points.
Organized tour — Many hotels offer day tours. Cheaper but less flexible.
