Italian Architecture Area (意大利风情区)

The Italian Architecture Area (意大利风情区) is the largest Italian-style architectural complex outside of Italy. Located in the Hebei District of Tianjin, this neighborhood was the Italian concession from 1902 to 1943, and its 200+ restored European buildings now house restaurants, bars, galleries, and boutique shops.

What to See

The area covers about 100,000 square meters and contains over 200 Italian-style buildings from the early 1900s. Walking through the tree-lined streets feels like stepping into a European city — pastel-colored facades, wrought-iron balconies, and terracotta roofs.

Key buildings:

• Former Italian Consulate — One of the best-preserved buildings, now a museum
• Ma Dianzi Church (马可波罗广场) — A small Italian church surrounded by a piazza
• Former residences of famous Chinese writers and politicians who lived here in the 1920s-30s

Food and Drink

The area is packed with Italian restaurants, wine bars, and cafes. Prices are higher than typical Tianjin restaurants (¥80-150/$11-21 per person for a meal), but the ambiance is worth it for an evening out.

• Best time: Late afternoon to evening, when the buildings are lit up and the outdoor cafes are lively
• Duration: 2-3 hours for a leisurely walk and coffee
• Getting there: Metro Line 2 or 3 to意式风情区 station (Italian Architecture Area station)
