Zhouzhuang Water Town (周庄)

Zhouzhuang (周庄, Zhōuzhuāng) is China's most famous water town — a place where stone bridges arch over canals, whitewashed houses lean over the water, and life moves at the pace of a rowing boat.

What to See

Double Bridge (双桥) — The most iconic bridge in Zhouzhuang — two bridges that form a right angle over the canal. The bridge has been painted by countless artists.

Shen House (沈厅) — A 14-room mansion built by a wealthy merchant in the Ming Dynasty. The house shows how the rich lived in old Zhouzhuang.

Canal Boat Ride — Drift through the narrow canals on a wooden rowing boat. The boatmen sing traditional songs as they row.

Tea Houses — Sit on a balcony overlooking the canal and drink tea while watching the boats go by.

Practical Tips

• Entry fee: ¥100 ($14) — includes all attractions
• Zhouzhuang is about 80km from Suzhou — take a bus (1.5 hours)
• Stay overnight to experience the town after the day-trippers leave
• The morning light on the canals is magical
• The town can be very crowded on weekends — visit on weekdays if possible
