Huangpu River Night Cruise: The Skyline From the Water

The Huangpu River (黄浦江, Huángpǔ Jiāng) cruise is the most obviously touristic thing in Shanghai and one of the few that earns it. For about 50 minutes the boat runs upriver past the Bund's floodlit stone banks and back down along Lujiazui's towers, then out toward the Yangpu Bridge. Standing at the rail with the whole thing rotating around you is a better view than any observation deck gives you, because you can see both sides at once.

Standard tickets run ¥120-150 ($17-21) depending on operator and boat. Multiple companies sell almost identical trips from Shiliupu Pier (十六铺码头) and the Bund pier; the differences are cosmetic. Ignore the ¥300+ ($42+) "premium" and dinner options unless you want a set meal you would not otherwise order.

The realistic downside is deck crowding. Everyone wants the same photograph and the upper deck rail fills within minutes of boarding, so arrive early. There is also a recorded commentary in Mandarin at moderate volume, and no English narration on most boats — it does not matter much.

Budget alternative worth knowing: the Jinling Road to Dongchang Road public ferry crosses the river for ¥2 ($0.28) with commuters, bicycles and scooters. Eight minutes, no commentary, roughly the same view of both banks. It is the best-value photograph in Shanghai.
