West Island (西岛, Xīdǎo) — 2.8 km² of coral islet set in the middle of Sanya Bay (三亚湾, Sānyà Wān) — is the quieter, half-price cousin of Wuzhizhou Island. A 15–20-minute ferry from Xiaoqigang Pier (小气港码头, Xiǎoqìgǎng Mǎtóu) in Tianya District drops you on glass-clear water ringed by soft sand. Allow 40–60 minutes from central Sanya by taxi or Didi (about ¥40–50 / $6–7), or take bus 16, 25, 26, 30 or 32.
Entry plus round-trip ferry is ¥95 off-season (May–September) or ¥98 in peak season ($13–14). Book ahead online — queues at the dock are brutal on weekends and holidays. Ferries run roughly 8:00–17:30 outbound, with the last return around 19:00 depending on the season. Islands don't move, but the sea does: typhoon season (roughly July–September) can cancel crossings with little notice.
Most of the island is a lived-in 400-year-old fishing village — coral-built houses, a sea library, and waterfront lanes that feel nothing like a manicured resort. Wander it before the beach. For the classic viewpoint, take the ¥35 ($5) electric cart up Niuwangling (牛王岭) and stay for the sunset. Snorkeling and easy reef diving start at about ¥150–398 ($21–56); jet skis and parasailing run ¥200–400 ($28–56).
West Island is a coral protection zone — no picking coral or shells, and it's enforced. Wear grippy shoes (coral shards are sharp), go reef-safe with sunscreen, and catch the first morning boat to dodge the crowds.

- Book your entry + round-trip ferry online a day ahead (official WeChat mini-program or Ctrip) — the dock queues and daily caps fill fast on weekends and Chinese holidays; bring your passport.
- Buy the ¥35 ($5) electric cart to Niuwangling for the best viewpoints, and time it for late afternoon — the sunset over the South China Sea here is the island's highlight.
- West Island is a coral protection zone: picking coral or collecting shells is prohibited and finable — leave the seabed exactly as you find it.
- Wear grippy, closed-toe shoes — coral fragments on the shoreline are sharp — and use reef-safe sunscreen; bring water since island prices are marked up.
- Ferries are short (15-20 min) but weather-dependent; summer typhoons can suspend crossings — check the forecast and confirm the last return time when you land.
- Try the fishing village's shrimp cakes (虾饼, xiā bǐng), about 4 for ¥10 ($1.40), and a qingbuliang (清补凉) cold dessert after the beach.
