Luhuitou Park (鹿回头, Lù Huítóu — "Deer Turning Its Head") is the 181-meter hilltop that gave Sanya its nickname "Deer City" (鹿城). According to the Li minority legend, a hunter chased a deer to this coastal cliff; just as he drew his bow the deer turned back, transformed into a beautiful girl, and the two fell in love. That story's memorial — a 15-meter granite deer-and-girl sculpture at the summit — is Sanya's most photographed landmark, and the reason couples flock here.
Entry has been free since 2022, making this Sanya's best-value viewpoint: a 270° panorama over Sanya Bay, Phoenix Island's sail-shaped towers, Dadonghai and the whole downtown skyline. Come for sunset. The show — gold sea, then city lights flickering on one by one — is the main event, so plan to arrive by 16:30 and stay until after dark.
Walk the winding, mostly shaded road up in 30-40 minutes, or ride the electric shuttle for ¥28 ($4) round trip / ¥14 ($2) one way. Daytime entry needs a real-name reservation via the WeChat mini-program "三亚鹿回头风景区"; after roughly 18:00 you can usually scan in directly. Bring your passport either way.
Two honest warnings. Wild macaques roam the forest — never feed or taunt them, and keep your phone and snacks out of sight, because they snatch. And the main platform crowds badly at sunset, especially weekends and holidays — arrive early to claim a railing spot, or settle on the quieter mid-mountain rest platform for the same view with fewer elbows.
