Houhai Village (后海村, Hòuhǎi Cūn) sits at the southern head of Haitang Bay (海棠湾), about 40 minutes from Sanya city center. It has become China's defining surf town: a working fishing village that grew a youthful, surprisingly international bohemian scene — board racks next to fish-drying racks, and the best beginner waves on the island.
The bay is pocket-shaped with a gentle seabed and steady 0.5-1m waves, surfable more than 200 days a year. That makes it the safest place in China to learn: a two-hour beginner lesson typically runs ¥200-400 ($28-56) with board and rash guard, or rent a board for about ¥100/hour ($14) if you already surf. Morning is calmest and least crowded — swim and surf inside the flagged zones, and follow your instructor's line.
The village itself rewards a slow wander: a walkable main lane of surf shops, cafes and homestays between two beaches. Try a Hainanese coconut-chicken hotpot or a seafood stir-fry for ¥50-100 ($7-14), and a shaved-ice qingbuliang (清补凉) to cool off.
When the sun drops, Houhai turns into Sanya's liveliest nightlife pocket — beach bars, live music and a night market grilling fresh catch until past midnight. Its location at the Wuzhizhou Island ferry jetty makes it easy to pair with a day trip there. Budget a half day at minimum, or stay a night to catch the full rhythm.
Practical tips
- This is China's top beginner surf spot — gentle 0.5-1m waves on a pocket-shaped bay with a soft seabed, surfable 200+ days a year. Book lessons in peak season (Nov-Mar) a day ahead; most surf shops have a basic English level.
- Arrive around 6:00 am to watch the fishermen bring in their catch and to shoot the golden-hour light before the crowds — the village still runs a real fishing life behind the surf scene.
- Avoid Chinese New Year and National Day Golden Week, when lessons, pads and restaurants are jammed and prices climb.
- After dark the beach fires up: bars with live music, impromptu DJ sets and a night market grilling fresh seafood and local snacks like qingbuliang (清补凉). Bangkok-style vibrant but much smaller.
- Getting here: about a 40-min taxi from Sanya city center (~¥80-120 / $11-17); bus 28 to the Wuzhizhou Island stop, then walk ~10 min. It's the ferry point for Wuzhizhou Island (蜈支洲岛) — easy to pair with a day trip.
