Dadonghai (大东海, Dà Dōnghǎi — "Big East Sea") is Sanya's city beach: a 2.9-km crescent of fine golden sand tucked between downtown and Yalong Bay, and the default base for independent travelers. It's free, open around the clock, and walkable from the densest knot of hostels, guesthouses, seafood stalls and bars on the island — which is exactly why it's the busiest public beach in Sanya.
The swimming is genuinely good: a gentle slope, no rocks underfoot, and water that stays swimmable year-round (about 22°C in winter, 28-30°C in summer). Swim only inside the buoyed zones, where lifeguards oversee the roped area roughly 7:00-19:00 — after dark, swimming is prohibited as currents pick up. Water quality beats Sanya Bay but trails Yalong Bay; on busy afternoons the sand is packed and the water looks stirred-up.
Facilities are solid: pay showers, lockers, toilet blocks, and beach chairs for ¥20-50 ($3-7) with swimming rings around ¥10 ($1.40). Water sports cluster in the middle section — jet skis, banana boats and parasailing from roughly ¥50-300 ($7-42). Bargain hard and agree the price before riding; jet-ski "damage" demands after the fact are Sanya's best-known beach scam.
When the sand gets crowded, the coconut-grove promenade behind the beach stays cool for a nature walk, and Luhuitou Park (鹿回头) — Sanya's best sunset viewpoint, ¥35 ($5) — rises right above the bay.
At night Dadonghai becomes Sanya's liveliest area. The seaside bar street (酒吧街, Jiǔbā Jiē) runs 20+ beach bars with live bands and weekend fire shows — beers ¥30-50 ($4-7), cocktails ¥60-100 ($8-14) — while night-market stalls grill seafood for a few dozen yuan. Coming from the airport, shuttle Line 1 costs ¥15-25 ($2-3.50); from downtown, buses run ¥1-8 or a taxi runs ~¥40-50 ($6-7).
Practical tips
- Swim only inside the buoyed zones — lifeguards supervise roughly 7:00-19:00 and swimming is banned after dark, when currents pick up. Heed the flags; rip currents are real even on calm-looking days.
- This is Sanya's busiest public beach: go before 10:00 or after 16:00 (sunset at the west end is the golden hour), and skip Chinese New Year and National Day Golden Week entirely.
- Agree water-sport prices in writing before riding, and photograph jet skis before use — 'damage' extortion is Sanya's best-known beach scam.
- Shade is scarce on the open sand: bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and water. The coconut-grove promenade behind the beach stays cool for a nature walk.
- Getting here: airport shuttle Line 1 ¥15-25 ($2-3.50), downtown taxi ~¥40-50 ($6-7), or buses ¥1-8. The seaside bar street stays open until midnight-3:00.
