Betelnut Valley, Sanya (槟榔谷)

Betelnut Valley (槟榔谷, Bīngláng Gǔ) — officially the Hainan Binglanggu Li and Miao Cultural Tourism Area — is China's first 5A-rated ethnic-culture park: a living museum of Hainan's indigenous Li (黎, Lí) and Miao (苗, Miáo) peoples hidden in the Ganshiling Nature Reserve. Lying about 28 km from downtown Sanya across the Baoting County border, it's the region's best half-to-full-day counterweight to the beaches — and the one place you can watch culture being made, not just displayed.

Getting there: buses from Sanya Coach Station toward Baoting or Wuzhishan stop at the gate (¥10–15 / $1.40–2, about an hour); a taxi or Didi costs roughly ¥100 ($14). Entry is ¥96 ($13) in peak season (Oct 1–Apr 30) or ¥80 ($11) off-peak; the Ancient Charm show (《槟榔·古韵》, "Betelnut · Ancient Charm") runs twice daily and costs ¥100 ($14) extra, and the sightseeing shuttle is about ¥30 ($4) per ride.

The valley spans three zones: the Intangible Cultural Heritage Village, where Li grandmothers demonstrate the traditional spinning, dyeing, weaving and embroidery that UNESCO lists as intangible cultural heritage; Ganshi Li Village, with its thatched boat-shaped houses; and a rainforest Miao stockade. You can try hand-spinning, primitive pottery or fire-drilling, dress in Li or Miao costume for photos, then refuel at the Li-Miao Food Street — bamboo-tube rice (竹筒饭, zhútǒng fàn), coconut rice and 清补凉 (qīngbǔliáng) herbal dessert.

The honest downsides: bus tour groups arrive from mid-morning, and the performances are staged for visitors. Arrive at the 8:30 opening, ride the shuttle up and walk down, and allow 4–6 hours — a full day if you catch every experience.
