Ancient Government Office (平遥县衙)

The Ancient Government Office (平遥县衙, Píngyáo Xiànyá) is a complete Qing Dynasty government office — one of the best-preserved in China.

What to See

The Courtroom — Where the magistrate held trials. The courtroom is set up exactly as it was 200 years ago — the judge's bench, the prisoners' cage, and the instruments of punishment.

The Dungeon — A dark, atmospheric dungeon where prisoners were held. The cells are small and damp — a glimpse into Qing Dynasty justice.

The Magistrate's Quarters — The personal quarters of the magistrate — a comfortable courtyard with gardens and a private study.

The Reenactments — Actors perform Qing Dynasty court trials — entertaining and educational.
