Nanning (南宁), capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, is known as the "Green City" (绿城) for its lush tropical vegetation and parks. Sitting on the banks of the Yongjiang River, Nanning is a vibrant, modern city with a strong Zhuang minority culture and excellent food.
While most travelers use Nanning as a transit point to Guilin or the Vietnam border, the city itself offers beautiful parks, a lively old town, and some of the best minority-cuisine restaurants in China.
Why Nanning?
The food. Guangxi cuisine is bold and flavorful — laoyou noodles (老友粉), zhuang-style rice dumplings, and grilled fish with chili. Nanning's night markets are legendary.
The greenery. Unlike many Chinese cities, Nanning has retained its tropical trees and parks. The city feels lush and green year-round.
The location. Perfect base for exploring Guangxi — Guilin is 3 hours by high-speed rail, and the Vietnamese border is 2 hours away.
