Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum (中山陵)

The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum (中山陵, Zhōngshān Líng) is the tomb of Sun Yat-sen, the father of modern China. Set in a forested hillside on Purple Mountain, the mausoleum is a masterpiece of modern Chinese architecture.

What to See

The Steps — 392 marble steps lead from the entrance to the main hall. The climb is symbolic — the number represents the population of China at the time of Sun Yat-sen's death.

The Main Hall — A grand hall with a bronze statue of Sun Yat-sen. The interior is simple and dignified, reflecting Sun Yat-sen's values.

The Tomb Chamber — A circular chamber with a sarcophagus (Sun Yat-sen's remains are actually in Bangkok, Thailand). The chamber is surrounded by marble walls.

The Forest — The mausoleum is surrounded by ancient trees — camphor, ginkgo, and pine. The forest is especially beautiful in autumn.
