Nanjing City Wall (南京城墙)

Nanjing City Wall (南京城墙, Nánjīng Chéngqiáng) is the longest ancient city wall in the world — 35km of Ming Dynasty brickwork that has stood for over 600 years.

What to See

Zhonghua Gate (中华门) — The largest and most impressive gate — a massive fortress with three levels and a hidden courtyard. The gate was designed to trap invading armies.

The Walk — Walk along the top of the wall for panoramic views of the city, Purple Mountain, and the surrounding countryside. The wall is wide enough for a car.

The Bricks — Each brick is stamped with the name of the maker and the date it was made. The quality control was strict — any defective brick meant execution.

Sunset Views — The wall is especially beautiful at sunset, when the bricks glow golden in the light.

Practical Tips

• Entry fee: ¥50 ($7)
• The wall is closed on Mondays
• Walk the Zhonghua Gate section — it's the most impressive
• Visit at sunset for the best views
• The wall can be windy — bring a jacket
