Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum (明孝陵)

Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum (明孝陵, Míng Xiàolíng) is the tomb of Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of the Ming Dynasty. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most important Ming Dynasty tomb in China.

What to See

Sacred Way (神道) — A 600-meter path lined with 18 pairs of stone animals — lions, elephants, camels, and mythical creatures. The animals are carved from single blocks of stone.

Great Red Gate — The main entrance to the tomb complex. The gate is made of red brick and wood, with carved stone plaques.

Stele Pavilion — A pavilion housing a massive stone stele with an inscription by the Yongle Emperor. The stele is supported by a stone tortoise.

Tomb Chamber — The burial chamber is built into the hillside. You can enter the outer chamber, but the inner chamber is sealed.

Practical Tips

• Entry fee: ¥70 ($10) — includes the Purple Mountain area
• The Sacred Way is especially beautiful in autumn when the ginkgo trees turn gold
• Combine with Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum — they're on the same mountain
• Allow at least 2 hours
