Meiling National Forest Park (梅岭)

Meiling National Forest Park (梅岭) is 15 km northwest of Nanchang and the city's green lung — a ridge of forested hills with a summit, a lake, a temple, and views back over the city and the Gan River valley. Locals come here on weekends to eat, drink tea, and get out of the heat.

Highlights

The climb. Paved steps and forest trails lead up to Meiling Summit, roughly 45-60 minutes each way. A cable car runs most of the route if you would rather skip the uphill part.

The view from the top. On a clear day you can see across the Gan River to Nanchang's whole skyline and the flat plain beyond. It is one of the few spots in the city where you get above the haze.

Lianxi Lake and the temple. A small lake and a Buddhist temple sit a flat five-minute walk from the entrance, and both make an easy slow half-day if you skip the summit.

Cool evenings. Meiling runs several degrees cooler than the city center, which is why the whole place fills up every evening in July and August.

¥30 ($4.20) for park entry plus the cable car, ¥15 ($2.10) for entry only. Open about 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM, closed Monday. No booking required. Metro Line 1 goes to Meiling station, then a short taxi ride; a taxi from the city center costs about ¥40 ($5.60). Bring water — there are teahouses near the top but the prices are tourist-level. Wear shoes with real grip, and go early in the day to beat both the heat and the weekend crowds.
