The Peony Garden (牡丹公园, Mǔdān Gōngyuán) is the heart of Luoyang's annual Peony Festival — a celebration of the city's most famous flower.
What to See
The Peonies — Hundreds of varieties of peonies in every color — white, pink, red, yellow, and purple. The flowers are enormous — some bloom to the size of a dinner plate.
Wangcheng Park (王城公园) — The largest peony garden — over 10,000 plants in themed areas. The park is the main venue for the Peony Festival.
The Festival — Every April, Luoyang hosts the Peony Festival — with cultural performances, food stalls, and night illuminations. The festival is a city-wide celebration.
The History — The peony has been Luoyang's symbol for over 1,000 years. The Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai wrote: "The peony blooms, and the capital falls."
