Longmen Grottoes (龙门石窟)

The Longmen Grottoes (龙门石窟, Lóngmén Shíkū) are one of China's greatest Buddhist art treasures — 100,000 statues carved into limestone cliffs along the Yi River.

What to See

The West Bank — The main area with the largest and most impressive statues. The Fengxian Temple has the largest statue — a 17-meter-tall Buddha.

The South Bank — The best-preserved grottoes with intricate carvings and detailed statues. The quality of the carving is extraordinary.

The Night View — The grottoes are illuminated at night — the statues glow against the dark cliff face. The sight is magical.

The River Walk — A path along the Yi River offers views of both banks. The reflections of the statues in the water are beautiful.

• Visit in the morning for the best light on the statues
