Potala Palace (布达拉宫)

The Potala Palace (布达拉宫, Bùdálā Gōng) is the most iconic building in Tibet — a white and red fortress that rises 117 meters above Lhasa. Built in the 7th century, it was the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas until 1959.

What to See

The White Palace — The living quarters of the Dalai Lamas, with throne rooms, bedrooms, and chapels. The views from the windows are breathtaking.

The Red Palace — The spiritual center, with golden stupas containing the remains of past Dalai Lamas. The largest stupa is 14 meters high and covered in gold.

The Chapels — Hundreds of chapels with Buddha statues, thangkas (religious paintings), and prayer wheels. The scent of butter lamps fills the air.

The View — The palace offers panoramic views of Lhasa and the surrounding mountains. The best views are from the courtyard at the top.

Practical Tips

• Entry fee: ¥200 ($28) — book online weeks in advance
• The climb is steep — take your time at 3,700 meters altitude
• Photography is allowed inside but no flash
• Allow at least 2 hours
• The palace is closed for maintenance on certain days — check in advance
