Namtso Lake (纳木错)

Namtso Lake (纳木错, Nàmùcuò) is one of the highest and most sacred lakes in Tibet — a turquoise jewel at 4,718 meters surrounded by snow-capped mountains and prayer flags.

What to See

The Lake — A vast expanse of turquoise water stretching to the horizon. The lake is sacred to Tibetan Buddhists — many come to circle it on pilgrimage.

The Mountains — The Nyenchen Tanglha range rises behind the lake, its snow-capped peaks reflected in the water. The mountains are sacred to Tibetan Buddhists.

Nomad Camps — Tibetan nomads camp along the shore in summer, tending their yaks and horses. Their colorful tents dot the landscape.

The Sunset — The sunset over Namtso is legendary — the sky turns orange, pink, and purple over the turquoise water and white mountains.

Practical Tips

• Entry fee: ¥120 ($17)
• The lake is 250km north of Lhasa — take a bus or join a tour
• The altitude is extreme at 4,718m — take altitude sickness pills
• The lake is best in summer (June-September)
• The road is rough — a 4x4 vehicle is recommended
