Jokhang Temple (大昭寺)

Jokhang Temple (大昭寺, Dàzhāo Sì) is Tibet's holiest temple — a 7th-century sanctuary that draws Tibetan Buddhists from across the plateau on pilgrimage.

What to See

Jowo Shakyamuni — The temple's most sacred image — a golden statue of the young Buddha, said to have been brought from Nepal in the 7th century.

The Courtyard — Pilgrims prostrate themselves in the courtyard, touching their foreheads to the stone. The devotion is moving to witness.

The Rooftop — The rooftop offers panoramic views of the Barkhor, the Potala Palace, and the surrounding mountains. A peaceful retreat from the crowded halls.

The Chapels — Dozens of chapels filled with Buddha statues, thangkas, and prayer wheels. The scent of butter lamps and incense is intoxicating.
