Stone Forest (石林)

The Stone Forest (石林, Shílín) is one of China's most spectacular natural wonders — a UNESCO World Heritage site where thousands of limestone pillars rise from the earth like a petrified forest.

What to See

Major Stone Forest — The main area with towering limestone pillars, some reaching 30 meters high. The pillars form narrow alleys, hidden chambers, and natural bridges.

Minor Stone Forest — A quieter area with smaller, more delicate stone formations. The limestone here is smoother and more sculptural.

Naigu Stone Forest — The most remote area — black limestone pillars that are older and more dramatic than the main forest.

Sani Culture — The Stone Forest is home to the Sani people, a branch of the Yi ethnic group. Their legends, songs, and costumes are inseparable from the landscape.

Practical Tips

• Entry fee: ¥130 ($18)
• The Stone Forest is 90km from Kunming — take a bus (1.5 hours) or join a tour
• Hire a local Sani guide at the entrance — they know hidden paths and legends
• Allow at least 3-4 hours
• The stone formations are best photographed in morning or late afternoon light
