Dianchi Lake (滇池, Diān Chí) is Yunnan's largest lake — a vast inland sea 30km long that has been the lifeblood of Kunming for thousands of years.
What to See
Western Hills (西山) — Forested mountains on the lake's western shore. Climb to Dragon Gate for panoramic views of the lake and Kunming city.
Dragon Gate (龙门) — A series of grottoes and pavilions carved into the cliff face above the lake. The view from the top is breathtaking.
Boat Rides — Take a boat across the lake and see Kunming from the water. The lake is especially beautiful at sunset when the water turns gold.
Seagulls — Every winter (November-March), thousands of black-headed gulls migrate from Siberia. The sight of gulls wheeling over the lake is magical.
