Kashgar Sunday Market (喀什周日大巴扎)

The Kashgar Sunday Market (周日大巴扎, Zhōurì Dà Bāzhā) is the largest livestock market in Central Asia — a Silk Road trading tradition that has continued unbroken for 2,000 years. Every Sunday, thousands of Uyghur, Kyrgyz, and Tajik traders converge on Kashgar to buy and sell animals, textiles, and spices.

What to See

Livestock Market — The main event. Horses, sheep, cattle, and camels change hands in a chaotic, colorful spectacle. The bargaining is intense — watch the hand signals under the cloth as traders negotiate prices.

Carpet Section — Uyghur and Kyrgyz carpets are traded here. Authentic handwoven carpets cost ¥1000-10000 ($140-1400).

Spice Market — Cumin, chili, saffron, and dozens of Central Asian spice blends. The smell alone is worth the visit.

Textile Market — Silk, cotton, and wool fabrics. Uyghur embroidery and traditional patterns.

Food Stalls — Lamb kebabs, naan bread, and pomegranate juice. Eat like a local.

Getting There

From Old City — Take a taxi (¥10-15/$1.40-2). The market is about 3km from the Old City.

By foot — If you're adventurous, you can walk. It takes about 40 minutes through residential neighborhoods.
